Taking a peek at the mommy-and-me fashion trend
“I am a strong woman because a strong woman raised me”.
A clothing movement that’s been around since the early 20th century is the mommy-and-me trend, and wow, it’s gone through some interesting looks over the years!
Siblings have done this for centuries. **Famous twins, Infantas Isabel Clara Eugenia and Catalina Micaela.
Let’s take a look at the mommy who first popularised the mother and daughter outfit trend, how famous international fashion houses are keeping the trend alive, and a few mommy-and-me outfit ideas just in time for the South African summer!
Who pioneered the trend?
You’ve seen those corny pictures of American families all posing in their matching Christmas sweaters. So, who first had the idea of dressing your children in the same clothing as you? Who started the mommy-and-me trend?
It was in 1897 that Jeanne Lanvin, a French couturière, had her daughter Marguerite and spotted a gap in the market. By 1908, Jeanne had launched a high-end children’s clothing line using the same luxury materials as her popular women’s range. Unfortunately, the Great Depression left luxury children’s clothing out of reach for the general public and the concept almost disappeared.
Fast forward to 1935 and actress Joan Bennett and her two daughters were regularly seen out-and-about in coordinated outfits. This pushed the trend, which soon rose to international esteem.
Today, celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé and Matthew Mcconaughey, as well as others, are all avid followers of the trend of dressing their kids in “mini-me” outfits.

An adorable mom and baby outfit trend this year is matching funny tees. Think mommy bear and baby bear on a t-shirt and baby romper of the same colour.
